The Cretan Gift Shop is situated in Kalyves, Hania Province, on the old main road next door to the post office.
We only stock crafts made in Crete.
the ceramics
The ceramics are hand made, hand painted, toxin free and suitable for a microwave and dishwasher. Over 100 plates are displayed in the shop with traditional Minoan and geometric designs. The colours are vivid and dramatic. There are a variety of bowls, mugs, jugs, lamps, ashtrays, candle holders, and condiment sets to name a few of the products available. The potter has a family business, which has been in operation since 1857. To-day most pottery is made in Taiwan or China and the designs are machine printed. Hand made, hand painted work is a dying skill. What price does one pay for original items?
the olive wood
There is a large variety of olive wood products, a hard wood known for it’s distinctive design. The shop holds several different wooden boards, coasters, lemon squeezers, olive and honey spoons, letter openers, wine holders and many other items.
the artwork
The works of art vary from prints on canvas of local scenes, to excellent hand painted silk batiks produced by local artists.
kalyves
Kalyves is a commercial village, on the North West coast of Crete. It is also a thriving holiday resort. The main square, platea, is surrounded by tavernas, shops and dominated by a very interesting church. There are two main beaches with very safe bathing, and a small harbour. Kalyves is within easy reach of Hania, Rethymon, Souda Bay, Georgopolis and has an agricultural hinterland. The view of White Mountain provides an excellent backdrop.
